secure Wipe options for PowerEdge T710 RAID disks

Hi, I have a client that we bought a new R730 server and we shutdown the old T710 that was almost 8 years old.  Now that 1 full month has passed, the time has come to officially decomission the old server.

 

  • What tools do you guys use for wiping the disks from the server PERC controller? 
  • Does the BIOS or storage manager include a Secure wipe option ?
  • Can DBAN detects disk on the PERC controller to wipe them directly on the server if not built-in option in BIOS or Storage manager ?
  • Can I remove each of the disk individually and run DBAN on them from an external SATA to USB3.0?  (is the SAS disks will work on a SATA connector ?)

The server will be resell or disposed, so the client want to be sure no data are left on it before so.

Hello

Available options will depend on the controller. Many of our controllers have an option for a full initialization, a full initialization writes zeroes to the drive(s). We also added a feature to our iDRAC/LCC called an LCwipe. An LCwipe will reset the system to defaults. I think LCwipe is still available with the iDRAC6, but it does not delete as much information as it does with newer controllers. You can read more about it in the iDRAC manual and RACADM manual.

No, SAS drives will not work on a SATA connector. SATA should work on a SAS connector.
