Single bit warning error rate exceeded (DIMM in PowerEdge R710)

In Dell OpenManage Server Administrator on a Dell PowerEdge R710, there is a caution symbol next to Main System - Memory - DIMM_A9.  Detailed error message is "Single bit warning error rate exceeded".  Unfortunately, the IT staff who had been managing that server is gone - worse yet, the server's warranty coverage has expired. 

Does this indicate the DIMM needs replacing?  Or should we pursue a different strategy?

Probably, but it may not actually be bad. I would suggest:

  • Power down the server, remove the DIMM indicated and the one next to it.
  • Swap positions and put them securely back in.

If the error comes back in the next few minutes, it likely needs to be replaced. If it comes back on slot A9, then the slot is likely bad. If it comes back on the other slot, in other words it followed the DIMM to the new slot, then the memory is bad. 

I would strongly recommend you update the LCC/iDRAC, BIOS and other hardware and drivers as well, as some bugs are addressed by updates to the system firmware.
