USB Boot from PowerEdge 2800

Does anyone know if booting from a USB drive is possible on the 2800?  My Bios version is A06.  I have attempted several BIOS tweaks, but nothing yet.

Thank you.

It can be done with a BIOS level as low as A2.  I can confirm this through direct experience ... I have dozens of 2800's and 2850's, and I never use CD's for OS installs anymore - I always install an OS (2008 family) with USB.

Check that in BIOS, the USB is enabled and ports turned on, and USB Emulation set to Auto.  Make sure your USB is formatted correctly to boot from as well.

What are you trying to boot to?

Thanks for the quick reply.  I am attempting to install NetWare 6.5.  I copied the contents of the NetWare CD to a USB drive.  You might be exactly right, I may not have the USB setup to boot from.

Appreciate your help.

Just copying the contents of a bootable CD to a USB key doesn't make it bootable.

I don't know about Netware, but just to give you an idea about how to make a Windows (Vista/2008 or later) bootable install USB key, the steps are:

- get a 4GB or larger USB key and copy any relevant data off of it

- put this USB key into a Windows Vista/2008 or later system

- open a dos window and type in "diskpart"

- type "list disk" and look for the USB key

- type "select disk #" (where # reflects the disk number for the USB key that you found in the previous step)

- type "clean"

- type "create partition primary"

- type "activate"

- type "assign"

- type "format fs=ntfs quick"

- then you copy the whole contents of a bootable Windows DVD to this USB key and you can install Windows from it.

This might work for you if you 'tune' it to use fat for the filesystem, but I cannot guarantee this.

Terrific advice!

What I eventually did was  use a later (CD OverLay install) version of Netware, that is NetWare 6.5 SP4a.  The earlier version SP2 did not work for me. Thank you very much for your help with the USB install .

I've done that and boot started from USB, all OS files were copied and after the "Loading files" the Windows Logo shows up and then the machine boots again. I the USB Drive is removed it starts asking for F1 to retry or F2 to Setup

It is a copy of Windows 2019 Server
