What to do with old servers?

Question

Hi, I have bee charged with getting rid of 5 rack mounted servers that we no longer need. There are 2 Poweredge2850's, 1 Poweredge 2950 and 1 Poweredge 1850. This is all new to me and I dont really know what to do with them. Money is not important I just need to get them out of the office. Any suggestions on what to do with them would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Neil

You could also sell them on eBay (they are between $50-60 for packaging and shipping at a UPS store), sell them in the local classifieds (depending on the tech and size of your area, this can be much easier than eBay), or donate them to a non-profit (think libraries, churches, schools, emergency response groups, etc.).  Donating them would be ideal if money is not important (easy and fast).

I agree with theflash1932, we typically try to find a local community college that would appreciate having equipment to use in a classroom environment for students. It tends to generate goodwill between our company and the school, and allows us to give back to the community, helps future IT workers put hands on actual equipment instead of just a book/web page, and sometimes opens the door for interns from the school to come learn at our organization. Doubt there is much tax benefit involved but it's possible.

Just make sure you clear your hard drives throughly before handing them over!!!

I wanted to add that if you have corporate data on the drives to properly wipe the drives (e.g. Darik's Boot and Nuke) before donating them servers.
