Adding a non Disc outside Raid5
Hello,
I have a 2950 P with Perc5 running Raid 5. Running Windows Server 03
Currently I have 3 x 146 SAS 2.5 and want to. Add an additional HD for backup purposes (of another server). Thinking of a 1 TB 7,2k rpm near line.
a. Can this be held outside the RAID5 configuration?.
b. Can this be done "hot"?
c. Will this have any impact on the RAID5 performance?
Thank you!

a. You can configure another drive (or drives) in addition to your RAID 5. If using a single disk, you will set it up as a single-disk RAID 0.
b. This can - and should - be done "hot", using the OpenManage Server Administrator software.
c. No it will not. The PERC can handle several separate Virtual Disks without affecting performance.

Thank you,
I have the server configured for 8 2.5" slots. What do recommend for SAS Near line?. I assume it could be an issue to use Sata

You shouldn't mix SAS and SATA on a PERC 5, so near-line is the way to go if you are talking about a high-capacity drive. I believe you could have both SAS and SATA on a PERC 6 or newer as long as they are not in the same array - which wouldn't make sense to do anyway.

There is one gotcha in your setup; I don't believe anyone has released a 1TB 2.5" drive yet (nearline SAS or SATA).

Thank you
I am actually trying to get a smaller one (SAS Near Line 2.5¨) and I cannot find anything. All I see on the Dell site are 3.5¨? Can I buy the 2.5¨SAS from someone else and get a caddy from Dell?

Dell won't sell the caddy/carrier by itself, and it is recommended you use a Dell drive in your system, as it is loaded from the manufacturer with Dell-specific firmware to run seamlessly with the PERC controllers. That doesn't necessarily mean you have to buy the drive from Dell, as you can get Dell co-branded drives from many suppliers.
This is 500GB Near-Line SAS drive in a "kit", which includes the carrier.

This is a 2TB (!) Near-Line SAS drive - sold as a bare drive, which means you would need to source a carrier from a third party.
