any suggestions for PC / server cooling (without case modification)?
hi there;
we have two ICS / LAN file servers here
a PE 2900(just got it this year) & a 600SC(old by server standards)
the IT dept. either doesn't seem to understand that heat kills, whether it's people or PC's / servers or they do and fixing "cooked" PC's / servers is their job so that's what they want
the older server has had a fan fry & a HDD fry that I'm aware of thus far, not to mention the numerous routers etc. that have cooked here
the 600SC used to be in a closed cupboard and now it's in a semi open closet,
the the PC @ reception desk is in a closed area of the desk with no ventilation whatsoever except the 2 inch hole where the cables come out (that thing gets so hot that if you were to place an unwrapped chocolate bar on top of it, it would be running off the edges within 1-2 minutes.)
my home pc's have extra fans installed, all my esternal USB HDD's have fans on them
(even my old 486's will still run because of the fans I put on them a long time ago).
but there's no where that I can see on these two servers to add cooling without severe case modifications, I have done modifications to my own machines but that's my machines and I'm not concerned with whether I need to cut a hole in the side of the case on mine, but I'm not in the position here to do such modifications
what are the best suggestions / solutions for cooling without modifying the case?
(I did see one but it was a bit ridiculous for me to try and impliment here, this guy had made a cardboard tunnel directly from the air conditioner unit to the server and then out the window on the other side, cute but not practical for this office space.)
cheers

Who was the genius who decided to put the system in an enclosed space? They are obviously highly intelligent and should become a member of mensa. That was sarcasm, by the way.
No system should ever be placed in an enclosed space with no ventilation.
They should be fine sitting in an open space without requiring extra cooling, but definately not in an enclosure with not airflow. If the server must be hidden away, an airconditioned room would be ideal.
