Bad Blocks on Virtual Disk
I have a T620 server with a PERC H310 Adapter and am running VMWare.
My virtual disk is reporting it has bad blocks. I ran a Check Consistency task and it completed with a result of "Passed".
Is this an indication that there are no bad blocks on the written portion of my virtual disk?
Can I clear the bad blocks with no data loss?
Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,
The consistency check will verify the data in each block. When it finds bad blocks it will check the parity data or mirrored data, depending on the RAID level. It will then remap the bad block. Passing the consistency check means that it did not have any blocks with bad data on multiple drives and was able to remap them. It does not mean there were not any bad blocks in written areas, just that it was able to remap the bad blocks. There is not anything you need to do now to manually clear the bad blocks.

Josh,
Even though my system passed the Consistency Check it is still showing bad blocks.
In order to get rid of the error message, shouldn't I clear the bad blocks?
Thanks,
Tom

Where are you seeing the error for the bad blocks?

If it is still showing it there then yes go ahead and clear the bad blocks. It will just delete them, so it would be a good idea to do a backup, though the fact that it passed the consistency check makes it less likely that there will be data loss.

On the Virtual Disks menu item titled "Physical Disks included in Virtual Disk 00".
Thanks,
Tom
