Can I delete the Raid?

Hi Guys,
I have a precision 620 workstation and two 18GB hard drives running Raid 1. Can I stop using Raid and have a total capacity of two hard drives? I am running Win 2000.
Thanks.

If you don’t need Raid at all and want to use both drives individually, you can forgo the Raid card, by un-installing it from the computer, and use the build-in SCSI controller to attached your SCSI cable.

Again, once the drives are removed from a raid configuration all data is lost, and you will need to re-install the operating system in one drive, and the other drive will be available to data storage, or whatever your need’s are.

You are using 2 drives for Raid 1 (Mirroring), and now you want to consolidate both drives as Raid 0 (No Mirroring) in order to have the aggregate size of both drives instead of half the capacity.

First you need to see if the card will allow you to change the configuration to Raid 0 without loosing the data. Some Raid card will allow changes to raid configuration, and rebuild the data to conform to the new Raid configuration.

If not, you will need to backup sensitive data to a non-Raid disk or tape, or other storage.
You will then need to delete the current raid configuration on the raid card, and create a new Raid 0 configuration: The aggregate size of two or more drives as a single logical drive.

Once this is done you will loose all the data that was previously stored:

In essence you have a blank Raid disk that will need to be formatted, and the operating system re-installed, and later you can add back your personal files and data.

I have had to re-install the software on this system but until I have installed the raid ARO-1302 floppy disk, the system will not see the hard drives. I would like to eliminate the raid altogether but do not know if I have to change any jumpers on the mother board or not. I would appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks

I am not familiar with the 620 I have the 530, but I am assuming you have a built in SCSI controller on the motherboard that you can plug the SCSI cable to it’s probably and Adaptec AC7XXX controller.

First you need to boot up and go into the computer BIOS (F2) you need to scroll down and find the section were it contains legacy devices, in there you should see a line indicating the SCSI controller, on most computer with raid cards this device is disabled, you will need to enable the device, and it will be the first boot device the system will use after you remove the raid card. Your drives are already configured with the Id’s since they worked under raid they have the correct pin on the ID selection.

So you will need to do the following:

Boot up, go to BIOS, enable the Built-in SCSI controller, save bios and exit.
Turn computer off, remove raid card, and install SCSI cable from the raid card to the motherboard SCSI controller.
Re-boot the system, and you will see the Adaptec controller scanning for SCSI drives it will list the two you have, you will need to F12 at this point to install the operating system from the CD drive.

After you install the operating system, Windows I presume, then go to “Computer Management” in the “Administrative Tools” and click on “Disk Management”, if the second drive did not configure, this tool is designed to recognize all drives: Format and assign a logical drive letter to the second drive.

Then you should go to go.

Then you should go to go; not a stutter,
I should read: Then you are good to go
