Cannot force HDD in Ready status to go offline
I need to replace a disk in RAID because of "Predictive failure reported for Disk 3 on Integrated RAID Controller 1"
/admin1-> racadm raid get pdisks -o -p state
Disk.Direct.3:RAID.Integrated.1-1
State = Ready
Disk.Bay.0:Enclosure.Internal.0-1:RAID.Integrated.1-1
State = Online
Disk.Bay.1:Enclosure.Internal.0-1:RAID.Integrated.1-1
State = Online
Disk.Bay.2:Enclosure.Internal.0-1:RAID.Integrated.1-1
State = Online
Disk.Bay.3:Enclosure.Internal.0-1:RAID.Integrated.1-1
State = Ready
When I try to put it offline in order to replace it I get the following error :
/admin1-> racadm storage forceoffline:Disk.Bay.3:Enclosure.Internal.0-1:RAID.Integrated.1-1
ERROR: STOR013 : One or more Storage device(s) are not in a state where the
operation can be completed.
Make sure the specified storage devices are in a state appropriate for
the requested operation and retry the operation.
What's the problem and how can I force it to turn offline in order to replace it ?
Thanks for your help

If that is the case then you should be able to assign it as the new hotspare.
Let us know how it goes.

@Praveen.Singh change the disk with what ?
Could you explain the part number and its importance ?
I don't anderstand why in racadm output I see for example :
"PartNumber = TH0WXPCX2123365C00GFA00"
and on the old disk itself it is :
"P/N: 1FF200-151"

Here is one more suggestion for you, you can try this when you are not booted to OS and working in RAID BIOS
from the POST screen hope this fix the issue.

@Praveen.Singh thanks. I tried remove and re-insert the new disk but it gives the same state/result.
The old disk has these properties :
And the new disk :
Is it compatible with Dell proweredge R420 ?

tdevred,
That drive does indeed look to be supported on that server, as I see an update listed for it on the support page under the R420. That being said you could look at updating the drive too.

@tdevred Thanks a lot for the Details you have shared, well have a doubt that it works if I am at your place I must use Dell Drive, not the IBM one.
Dell PowerEdge T-Series: T620 T630 T640 T710 Servers.
Dell PowerEdge R-Series: R210 (Gen I, II) R220 R230 R310 R320 R330 R410 R415 R420 R430 R510 R515 R530XD Servers.

@tdevred Simple step if you purchased this from a supplier ask for a dell replacement and I am 100% sure it will work, and the IBM one will not work at all despite any upgrade its my own field Exp of(15 years) get a dell one and all fixed.
Happy to see you once you come back with a solution.
Thanks for your time..!!

Hello,
The patrol read process ran this week and seemed to fix few things, now I have :
/admin1-> racadm storage get pdisks
Disk.Bay.0:Enclosure.Internal.0-1:RAID.Integrated.1-1
Disk.Bay.1:Enclosure.Internal.0-1:RAID.Integrated.1-1
Disk.Bay.2:Enclosure.Internal.0-1:RAID.Integrated.1-1
Disk.Bay.3:Enclosure.Internal.0-1:RAID.Integrated.1-1
And for disk 3 more specifically :
/admin1-> racadm storage get pdisks -o
...
Disk.Bay.3:Enclosure.Internal.0-1:RAID.Integrated.1-1
Status = Ok
DeviceDescription = Disk 3 in Backplane 1 of Integrated RAID Controller 1
RollupStatus = Ok
Name = Physical Disk 0:1:3
State = Non-Raid
OperationState = Not Applicable
PowerStatus = Spun-Up
Size = 1117.25 GB
FailurePredicted = NO
RemainingRatedWriteEndurance = Not Applicable
SecurityStatus = Not Capable
BusProtocol = SAS
MediaType = HDD
UsedRaidDiskSpace = 0.00 GB
AvailableRaidDiskSpace = 1117.25 GB
Hotspare = NO
Manufacturer = IBM 207x
ProductId = ST1200MM0088
Revision = B587
SerialNumber =
PartNumber =
NegotiatedSpeed = 6.0 Gb/s
ManufacturedDay = 0
ManufacturedWeek = 0
ManufacturedYear = 0
ForeignKeyIdentifier = null
SasAddress = 0x5000C50093B4CD59
FormFactor = Unknown
RaidNominalMediumRotationRate = 0
T10PICapability = Not Capable
BlockSizeInBytes = 512
MaxCapableSpeed = Unknown
SelfEncryptingDriveCapability = Not Capable
But still SerialNumber and PartNumber are not showing...
I want to assign it as a dedicated hotspare but when I try I get this error :
/admin1-> racadm raid hotspare:Disk.Bay.3:Enclosure.Internal.0-1:RAID.Integrated.1-1 -assign yes -type dhs -vdkey:Disk.Virtual.0:RAID.Integrated.1-1
ERROR: STOR009 : Physical disk FQDD did not identify a valid physical disk for the operation.
Provide compatible physical disk with the operation
I don't know if I must convert the disk to RAID capable before to assign it as hotspare but when I try I get the same error :
/admin1-> racadm storage converttoraid:Disk.Bay.3:Enclosure.Internal.0-1:RAID.Integrated.1-1
ERROR: STOR009 : Physical disk FQDD did not identify a valid physical disk for the operation.
Provide compatible physical disk with the operation
Any idea about that ? Does it mean that the disk is not compatible with my system ?

Hi,
To my opinion, the IBM drive does not contain Dell DPN#, hence it is not a Dell drive. Dell drives do have firmware that communicate with the PERC card. You will not be able to update non-Dell drive with Dell firmware. You will face issue in such of this.
