Compatibility matrix for RAID controllers

Hi

I'm looking to upgrade T630 to a better RAID . Perc h740 looks  very attractive.  But I don't see 13G servers in the "Legacy support matrix" from  https://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/04/campaigns/dell-raid-controllers

Is it supported ? If it's not supported is it expected to work ? I assume the base functionality should work with direct attach backplane (8x3.5), but probably it will not work with idrac8.  Has anyone tried it ?

Also I plan to reuse h730p in T620 to be able to use 4kn disks in a backup sever  (8x3.5 backplane) I understand from "Legacy support matrix" that this configuration is not supported, but did somebody tried it ? In other thread (r820 and 12G disks) there was a link to video that claims that H330 does check for backplane ID and goes to fail state if it detects "wrong one" will H730 do the same ? I'm fine loosing some functionality like integration with IDRAC or OMSA as long as core functionality works and I can configure RAID through BIOS or StorCLI

Thanks!

Hi,

you are right, the H740 is not compatible with your server model but the H730 is the equivalent model for your server. If you are searching for high performance, plan to purchase the H730p model. https://dell.to/3mFfcBX

I remain at your disposal

Hi Stephane,

h730 and h740 are based on different generation of LSI ROC combined with  2GB DDR3 vs 8GB DDR4 should make notable difference in terms of performance for RAID6 configuration.

So is there any chance you can clarify what "Not compatible" means ? Is there anything in Dell custom firmware that   verifies / denies this card from working in 13G servers ?

The controllers are only supported on the generation they are intended for, that doesn't mean they definitely won't function, just that we can't guarantee the results from running them outside of intended use, or if the driver and firmware are able to be run on the other server or OS.
