Consistency check problem

Hi all, I have a weird problem, running a consistency check on a Dell server, and it stays at 15% for the last 2 days. RAID is 5, disks are not Dell, but Ironwolf PRO NAS, 18 Gb each, three disks in a virtual disk.

I have alternating orange and green lights on two disks out of three.

Any guess what might be the problem and how to remedy it?

Machine is Dell PowerEdge R340. Virutual disk status is optimal, disks have no errors...

Best, Tom

It's possible that the consistency check is taking a long time due to the size of the RAID 5 array and the speed of the Ironwolf PRO NAS disks. The alternating orange and green lights on two of the disks may indicate that the disks are rebuilding or resyncing. If the virtual disk status is optimal and the disks have no errors, then you can probably ignore the lights and let the consistency check finish.

If you're concerned about the long running consistency check, you can try to cancel it and then restart it. However, this may not resolve the issue, and it could potentially damage the RAID array if it's not done correctly.

Here are some steps on how to cancel and restart the consistency check:

  1. Open the Dell OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) tool.
  2. In the left pane, expand the Storage node and then select RAID Controllers.
  3. In the right pane, select the RAID controller that contains the RAID 5 array.
  4. In the Tasks pane, select Cancel Consistency Check.
  5. Click OK to confirm that you want to cancel the consistency check.

Once the consistency check is canceled, you can restart it by following these steps:

  1. Open the OMSA tool.
  2. In the left pane, expand the Storage node and then select RAID Controllers.
  3. In the right pane, select the RAID controller that contains the RAID 5 array.
  4. In the Tasks pane, select Start Consistency Check.
  5. Click OK to start the consistency check.
