Well here is what dell says about activating the ROMB. I suspect it may be a 256 M/B DIMM you're needing as well.  As this system is not too old, the memory , battery and battery cable should be available from Dell spare parts.

I've seen the guide for installing the ROMB card, but it doesn't say anywhere exactly what is required, other than the full kit contains the card + key + memory + battery.

 

The memory modules are on their way to me, but I'd very much like to find out whether I can run it without  the battery. It's not the money that's a problem, it's the shipping time from Dell since I really needed to have these servers up and running last week. I've contacted Del but they couldn't tell me whether it would run without the battery :(

Hi Mark,

 

  Batteries fail, and the PERC controllers keep on working with the write cache disabled because data on the fly would be lost if an unexpected shutdown should occur.  There is even one server model with a ROMB that does not have a battery.

   Warwizard is right, the controller will not work without the memory, there needs to be working space to calculate parity for the RAID 5, as well as buffers for reads and writes.
