Error Log Test Failure

We had a small error on our web server this morning and after a few tests, we found only one thing that causes us to worry a little:

Array Disk ([PERC 4/Di, 8:8:1] Chan: 0, ID: 00) (RAID Hard Disk Elite Test)
Device Description: MAXTOR ATLASU320_73_SCA
HW/OS Description: SCSI Array Disk [PERC 4/Di Bus8:Dev8:Func1] Channel0:Target0:Lun0
Time Stamp: Thu Apr 06 11:18:30 2006 EDT
Test Result: FAILED
Result Details: Device failed the error log test: Check SCSI cable connections and termination, and then run this test again. If this error occurs again, a hardware problem may exist.
Requested Passes: 1
Passes Run: 1

Now being the hardware IT guy in the office, i'm thinking we may have to replace the drive. The software guys think it's an easier fix. Any thoughts on a solution? The test was run 5 times.

Hi slockwood,

Dell engineering dropped the Elite disk diagnostics a while back...

Poweredge diagnostics: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R106752&SystemID=PWE_PNT_2800&os=WNET&osl=en&deviceid=7603&devlib=0&typecnt=1&vercnt=4&formatcnt=2&fileid=138016

Check the system event log, see if you have error messages from the RAID controller driver, especially if the drive (0,0,0) has a predictive failure... If it does, yes, you should replace the drive.

Ok, I checked the event logs for errors, but I didn't see anything for the SCSI. Thanks for the new diagnostic tools, I ran the full scan several times and still see that error. The drive is about four years old, so i'm thinking we may need a new drive. Is there anything else I can check remotely (the server is in a building across town) before I go do a physical check on the connections?

Hi slockwood,

The only concern is that it's failing due to an error log that may be left over from a previous incident.

If you have Dell openmanage server assistant installed or Dell open manage IT assistant installed you can view the ESM logs and see what the error really was and when it was reported, clear the logs and see if the error returns.
