How to replace HotPlug disk in RAID1 under Suse 10.2 ?

My server (Dell Poweredge 840, Suse Enterprise 10.2 with Plesk 8.2) is installed with a Raid1 configuration (2 160Gb HotPlug SATA discs - SAS 5iR internal RAID controler PCI-e).

Now one disks crashed, I need to replace it. I can see an entry in the message logfile regarding the Raid status (I'm surprised to not get an alert message directly from the server!).

I have a similar HotPlug disk available (it does contain data however), so what is the procedure in order to get the 2n disk working again?

Should I rebuild something at the Raid level or is the system able to rebuild the new disk based on the one already in the server?

Thanks for your help.

PS: by the way is there somewhere a good documentation which explains what/how to do in similar cases (ie. 1 disk crashes and the server is rebooted, in fact it does not start anymore, etc.)?

Hi baden32,

The usual method is while the system is running, remove the failed drive and install the replacement. the PERC should detect the removal and insertion and kick off the rebuild.

If you have both drives offline, you would go into the controller BIOS and force the last drive to fail online and attempt to boot. If successful you reseat or replace the offline drive, if fails to boot, force that drive offline and force the other online, and try the boot again. If neither drive boots, and one of them had other errors, remove the drive with other errors from the server and inspect the backplane connector for damage, force the other drive online and try the boot again.
(while there you check both drives for correct capacity displayed, and no media or other errors)

None of the above required any management S/W to be installed, if you do have a RAID management S/W that runs on your O/S you can do many of the inspection steps from within the app.

If you run into problems such as the rebuild not starting you should call or chat in to dell server support.
