IDE raid 5 controller logical drive info disk mismatch.

Hi,

have one power edge 600SC server Raid 5 controller card and three IDE HDD's.

removed old 40Gb drives in october, replaced with new 160Gb drives and fresh isnstalled Microsoft SBS. everything works fine.

Some personal data was not backed up or moved during the change.

I removed the new 160Gb disks from the server, put back the old (40Gb) ones although the correct order these should be in is not know. (which was on which channel).

Got disk mismatch error (NVram/ drive mismatch).

using the CTRL H looked in the bios config utility, view/add config option, it sees the old drives correctly at 40Gb each, I saved the 'new' disk config, rebooted.

new error message - unable to load operating system. In Bios logical drive still showing 305Gb. Read on internet that clear the controller card config and it will look to the HDD's for the correct logical drive info.

This is the problem, I should have disconnected the drives first it appears, as I have not only cleared the config from the raid card, but also the drives. now there shows no logical drive data when you press F3, and the view/add config shows the drives as 'ready' and not online.

I believe my only hope is to rebuild the array, without initialising the drives... thoughts?

As this is the only server I have, I had to reinstate the new drives (which worked fine) and the server is running and online again.

So the problem is how to rebuild the array, safely ( I cannot afford to loose this data) and also work out the correct order the disks should be in.

Hmmmm call dell, they have a procedure called Re-Tag the HDD. That way they may get it to work. Good luck.

Manage to suss it with some help from dell.

I cleared the config from the card and drives again, rebuilt the logical drive and rebooted, because the way the drives were supposed to be was unknown, it errored saying no bootable device found.

So I started again, with the disks in a different combination of the possible 6. Again cleared the config on both card and drives, rebuilt the logical drive using default options and rebooted, once we got the drives in the orginal combination it booted and the data was retrieved. nice.
