PE1800: Upgrading array disks - best approach?

Hi,

I have a PE1800 which has 6 drives installed in a 5 drive single array with 1 hot spare.

The drives are all 250GB and I'd like to add extra capacity by replacing two of them with 750GB units.

Unless I've missed it in the documentation, there's no clear guidance on the best way to approach this task so I'm looking for some pointers before I screw things up :-)

Thanks!

I assume we're talking RAID 5. You cannot upgrade a single disk in a RAID 5 array to a large size and expect to get more space, doesn't work that way. For instance, if you have 5 drives, three 300 GB and two 250 GB, the most space per drive that you'll be able to use is 250 GB per drive.

You will most likely need to backup your data, destroy the RAID array and replace ALL the disks with bigger capacity drives and restore from backup.

I would call Dell's tech support line and speak with an engineer for some more formal advice.

Good luck.
