PE2950 RAID5 Disk Replacement

Hi all.

Any help with the following greatly appreciated.

I have a PowerEdge 2950 RAID 5 config with one of four Seagate SAS Cheetah ST3146356SS 146GB drives having failed. The failed drive which has been removed has firmware version HS09, config code 1341.

I do have available a Dell SAS Cheetah, also ST3146356SS 146GB drive, same firmware HS09 but config code 1311.

Is this drive fully compatible with the remaining 3 drives and if so, what is the recommended installation procedure?

TIA.

Regards

Craig

Hello Craig61,

It looks like you have a suitable drive for replacement.

For confirmation ; Could you post the DP/N number from the label on each drives?

You have the failed drive removed already so now you would just install the replacement drive. The rebuild should start automatically.  If it does not then use the Controller BIOS or OpenManage Server Administrator to set the replaced drive as a Hot Spare and the rebuild should start.

@Dell -Charles R

Hi Charles, thanks for replying. I've attached images of the failed drive and potential replacement. The 3 good drives are still running but if you'd also like to see the information from those then please let me know,  it's a non-production server so shutting it down wouldn't affect any users.

Ideally (and obviously) I'd like to avoid any RAID rebuilding, just insert the relacement drive hot and let the system incorporate it.

Kind regards

Craig

Hello Craig61,

Thank you for the images. You will be ok to use that drive as a replacement.

The rebuild should start automatically after you install it.  If it does not then use the Controller BIOS or OpenManage Server Administrator to set the replaced drive as a Hot Spare and the rebuild should start.

@Dell -Charles R Hi Charles,  thank you. I'll install the replacemen drive and let you know how it goes. Not now, too late in the day and not tomorrow, too near the weekend so it will be on Monday morning when I'll also have a current full backup of that machine.

Regards

Craig
