PERC H710 failed drives

I recently picked up a PowerEdge T620 and I have two RAID setups. One that works and one that doesn't.

1. What works;

PERC H710 connected to the Dell 8 bay backplane populated with 3.5 SATA drives.

2. What isn't working

PERC H710 connected to a 3rd party drive cage for 8 2.5 drives populated with Hitachi SAS drives.

The 2.5 SAS RAID isn't working. Initially the drives were recognized and I was forced into the BIOS configuration utility. My only option was to 'secure erase' the drives. After that they all drives reported as failed and I have no configure options.

Does the PERC H710 require a Dell backplane?

Hello,

As far as I know yes it needs a backplane. The problem is probably because the disk you are trying to cage is not recognized by firmware. As a possibility, you can try again by updating the H710 to the latest version, but I think it won't work again. By the way, Are the Hitachi drives you refer to are Dell-certified drives, and if not, that could create another problem. (You can check FW if it's Dell certified drivers) Some users can use 2.5 "drives on a 3.5" backplane with hybrid adapter hard drive carriers. Of course, the ideal 2.5 "backplane is used.

The backplane and cable I can find for the T620 2.5 "drives are as follows;
BKPLN, 16X2.5,T620             part no: 018G5
CBL, PERC8, FIX BAY, T620 part no: 9DHPJ

Supported controllers and backplanes for T620 pg 26 - pg29 https://dell.to/3h7Whh7
