[PERC S130] Slow performance

Server: PE R230

OS: Windows 2012 R2

RAID: 1

Driver version of raid controller: 4.2.0-0009

Performance of i/o operations is very slow. Any idea what can be done to increase it?

Hard to troubleshoot, because it is hard to know what proper expectations for these controllers should be. Begin with the starting point that these S130 controllers are pretty horrible. They are rebranded Intel chipset RAID controllers, which is bad enough, then they have a Dell branding layer thrown over them, making them even worse.

My recommendation is that if you ever even CONSIDER running a benchmark, do not use these controllers. You would be MUCH better off with OS-managed RAID if you care about performance with no investment in decent hardware.

In nearly all scenarios, the H7x0 controllers should be used.

You have my condolences, perhaps the worst raid performance I have seen... sneaker-net might be faster, as long as you walk fast....

Agree with Flash, it would be difficult to diagnose as there could be 100 variables to look at.; aside from the fact the raid controller is about as low quality  as you can go, perhaps the lowest.. You might get somewhere if you had a tech on site who has run into this controller before, but you would be better off getting a H7x0 controller as suggested. Personally I have dealt with many low end raid performance issues, it is just not worth spending an inordinate  amount of time on them.  Cut your losses, purchase a high end controller. Another thing, the low end controllers are dangerous as far as possible data loss.

Thank you guys for your answers and advices. I undarstand that for high performance is only right way to use hardware raid but main thing is I can't belive that dell could put on sale servers with this "raid"... As I see I'm not alone who faced with this problem (en.community.dell.com/.../19649738).

Hi! Try checking what kind of hard drives You have in Your setup. Dell in my oppinion made a fraud with R230 hardware setup.

I brought a ready-made configuration with 2x HDD with very poor RAID1 performance. With support's help it turned out that installed HHD are desktop type not supported by S130 RAID controller. According to Dell "ALL IS OK" because when leaving Dell's storage discs weren't configured for RAID (RAID was turned off). So for me this is a fraud because selling server equipped with RAID and 2 disks that are not for RAID configuration is something that shouldn't be sold by respectable manufacturer. If I've lived in USA I would sue Dell to recompense for lost time and nerves but in Poland it's futile.

I've decided to buy a server from "respective" company because I supposed that they test the configurations, but it turned out that they sell ***.

I've solved this problem by buying proper HDD (Seagate Constellation, not from Dell) and disk performance suddenly bacame acceptable. I don't understand why Dell could'n install proper HDD'a at the begining.
