Poweredge 1900 RAID 5 Issue
Hello all,
I have what I believe is a self inflicted issue.
I have a powerdege 1900 that was booting fine (SBS 2003). This is a server that is no longer in use except to occasionally boot up access to one old application (dental office). I wanted to create a VHD out of the server and turn it into a HyperV server so we can dispose of the physical server. I use Storage Craft which has the ability to image the machine into VHD. However, to accomplish this I attempted to connect a 500 GB SATA drive to the MB so that I would have a place to store the image. The only change I made to the PC was to go into the BIOS and set all four SATA options from Off to Auto in hopes that it would see the drive as just a connected SATA. However when I booted the PC after this I got a message that Utility partition is not available. I then noticed during boot that I was getting the message that Logical drive failed. I entered the RAID utility (ctrl-r) and it was reporting 2 of the physical drives have failed. I understand the implications of this. However, years ago we were running low on hard drive space and I purchased a 4th drive from Dell and installed it in the server but never got around to joining it to the RAID so it has just been in the servers HD tray with the other three drives. Now I have to assume a little bit here so bear with me. In the drive tray that holds the physical drives, there are drives in trays 0,1,2, and 3. I would have to assume that when Dell build the server, the original drives were in 0,1, and 2 and that the drive I added later was stuck into tray 3. It appeared that the drive in tray 3 was listed as part of the RAID which I found odd. As a test, I unplugged that drive and booted and went into the RAID utility and sure enough it showed one of the drives of the RAID now missing. I shut the server down, re-connected the drive and booted again and now i am getting 2 of the drives missing (I have verified that all SATA connections are secure. I was also very careful to make sure all SATA cables stayed connected to their associated drives
At this point I have shut the server down and will await. hopefully, so knowledgeable guidance in hopes of saving the data (this server has been out of use for a few years and there may not be a backup of it anymore.
One more note, when I boot it now I get a message Foreign Configuration found on adapter. I did not press any keys at this point and just let it continue to boot.
Any help is greatly appreciated . Also, I do understand that there is the chance that two of the dirves failed but it sure feels like my changes in the BIOS were the cause.....BTW, this is a perc 5i controller.

Hello
I would unplug the SATA drive that you added, turn the SATA mode back to auto, and then import the foreign configuration. If the import fails then you should contact a data recovery company before proceeding, if the data is critical and there is no backup.
You can find information about foreign configurations and the operations in the storage controller manual. There is data on each drive and the controller describing the virtual disk. Any time there is a mismatch between those descriptors on the controller versus what is expected to be on the drive the controller will put that drive into a foreign state. This is a protection to keep a drive from becoming a member that does not contain valid or current data.

I have already removed the SATA drive that I connected to the MB. My questions before I follow your instructions is about the drive that I added to the PERC long ago that never became part of the RAID.
1. Is it safe to assume that when Dell built the server they put three original drives into chassis spots 0,1 and 2 and therefore the drive I added is in 3?
2. Will that drive that I added have any affect or should I just unplug it?
Thanks for the information, it is greatly appreciated.
Looking at the drives through the front of the case, all 4 have a green light...whether that means anything or not...

Update:
I set all SATA back to Auto in BIOS and rebooted. When I click on C to load perc 5 config, I see the following.
Physical Disks
00:00
missing
missing
When I ctrl-n over to Foreign View I see
Virtual Disks
Virtual Disk 0
Physical Disks
00:00
00:03 (foreign)
Missing
Also, using ctrl-n to move to PD Mgmt I see 4 seagate drives, 0-3
0 = online
1 = Failed
2 = Failed
3 = Foreign

I would suggest reaching out to a data recovery company. It does not appear that an import would be successful. There are members in the foreign and current view that are missing. Fee-based support can look through the controller logs and maybe attempt to either force drives online or retag the virtual disk. Those options will not be available if the storage controller is not able to communicate with a minimum number of functional drives. In RAID 5 that would be n+1. It looks like two of the members are missing from the current and foreign view, so recovery is not currently possible.
Since drives 0:1 and 0:2 are not detected your best course for data recovery is a data recovery company. You should get a storage controller log for your records. The log is stored in volatile memory and retains the last ~10k lines.
