PowerEdge 740xd 12xSATA: move ssd to internal bay

I'm confused about my expansion options and could use some guidance.  I have a PowerEdge 740xd with 12 SATA front load bays.  One of those bays is occupied by an ssd (boot drive) and the remaining bays hold HDDs.   There are currently no internal or rear drive bays in this server.

I would like to move the SSD to an internal bay and add a second SSD internally, as well.  Is this possible with my hardware?

If so, which expansion cards, cables, and adapters would I need to do this?

Thanks.

Hello Martin,

According to the Dell EMC PowerEdge R740xd Installation and Service Manual1, your system supports up to two internal 2.5-inch SATA SSDs in the flex bay. The flex bay is located at the back of the system, below the power supply units. To install the internal SSDs, you will need the following components:

  • A flex bay drive backplane kit, which includes the backplane, the cables, and the screws. The part number for this kit is 0YRJ9P.
  • A flex bay drive carrier kit, which includes two 2.5-inch drive carriers and the screws. The part number for this kit is 0R740XD.
  • Two 2.5-inch SATA SSDs of your choice, such as the Dell 480GB SSD SATA Mix Use 6Gbps 512e 2.5in Hot-plug Drive, 3.5in HYB CARR, S4610.

To install the internal SSDs, you will need to follow these steps:

  • Power off the system and disconnect the power cords.
  • Remove the system cover.
  • Install the flex bay drive backplane on the chassis using the screws provided in the kit. Connect the power cable and the data cable to the backplane and the system board.
  • Install the SSDs into the drive carriers using the screws provided in the kit. Slide the drive carriers into the flex bay slots until they click into place.
  • Replace the system cover and reconnect the power cords.
  • Power on the system and configure the SSDs in the BIOS or the RAID controller.

For more details and illustrations, you can refer to the installation and service manual1, pages 112-115.

I hope this information is helpful to you. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. 😊

Thanks so much for this answer.  This exactly the info that I was looking for.

However, I've been unable to find these parts on the Dell store.  I've got a Dell reseller helping me, and he's having trouble finding the parts as well.  Can you direct me to a purchase page for these items?

It will likely be easier to find them if you reach out to the Dell Spare Parts group at 800-372-3355.

Let me know if this helps.
