Problems creating a virtual disk

PowerEdge 2400 with a PERC 2/Si controller.

Originally, I had 2 36gb drives in a RAID 1.

I just got 4 new 73gb drives.  I added them to the server, the server saw them and I initialized each one.  Now I want to use them to create a new RAID 5 virtual disk with these 4 drives.  I go through the process of adding the 4 disks to a RAID 5.  When I get to the end, it says:

The free space specified does not exist.  If new disks have been inserted, a rescan of the controller is requried.

I have performed a rescan, but still the same results.  Any comments?

Hi gregkelley,

Try updating the F/W and driver and management utility. Early versions of F/W were limited.
If using FAST the FAST version needs to match the driver version and the F/W version.

Hi gregkelley,

What is your current level of controller F/W, RAID driver, and which management utility and version?

Thanks, Gary.  However, the notes I found for upgrading the F/W called for an update to the BIOS for the server and the BIOS update said to only perform the BIOS update to A09 if the server was running Windows 2003.  We are running Windows 2000.

GaryS,

Thanks for replying.  My Dell PERC RAID driver is version 2.5.0.3070.  I don't know the F/W version because I can't reboot right now.

I'm trying to upgrade my managment utility (to uncover an alert light issue) but am having trouble.  It keeps telling me that an older version of System Administrator is installed but I removed the only items I had installed: Dell Library and Tape Tools and Dell Array Manager.  I have nothing else installed but it won't let me install version 4.5 of the System Administrator.

Thoughts?

Hi GregKelley,

It sounds like you need to run the OMclean utility that removes all traces of openmanage installs from your registry. Find OM clean on the root directory of your openmanage CD, and you should run it 3-4 times in a row. Next, you'll need to make sure the driver and F/W are at the same version, and at the most recent version you can install. .
If you're willing to install FAST, which requires a reboot, I can walk you through commands to execute that will allow us to see exactly what is happening. The FAST CLI gives us low level control of the controller, allowing us to T/S in ways not allowed by the various graphical interfaces. Do not have FAST and any version of Array manager installed at the same time, they both use the same API calls to manage the controller, and fight over control. FAST MUST be at the same version as the driver and firmware.

Thanks, Gary.

OmClean did the trick.  However, the Server Admin won't let me install the SCSI RAID components because it says I have an old driver.  To upgrade my Perc 2/SI driver, I have to upgrade the F/W.  To do that, I have to upgrade my BIOS from A08 to A09.  But the release notes for A09 say not to install it unless I am going to Windows 2003.  I do not plan to do that.  Is it still ok to to go A09?

Hi Gregkelley,

  I don't know.

Have you tried going to an older version of array manager?
