Proper way to assign hot spares

R750 with PERC H745 controller. Single virtual disk RAID5 array with 8 960GB SATA SSD's.

Is it sufficient to assign additional physical drives as Global Hot Spares? Will these Global Hot Spares be automatically used if there is a failure of any RAID physical drive?

Reason I ask is that I see, through OMSA, ways to assign physical drives as hot spares to a particular virtual disk. Do I need to create hot spare and/or Global hot spare policies for hot spares to work?

Hi,

yes, it is sufficient to assign additional physical drives as Global Hot Spares. Global Hot Spares will be automatically used if there is a failure of any RAID physical drive. This will help to ensure that your RAID array remains functional and that your data is protected.

Here are the steps on how to assign physical drives as Global Hot Spares:

  1. Log in to your PowerEdge server using the iDRAC web interface or the iDRAC CLI.
  2. Navigate to the "System Setup" tab and select "RAID".
  3. In the "Physical Disks" section, select the physical drives that you want to assign as Global Hot Spares.
  4. Click the "Assign Hot Spare" button.
  5. The selected physical drives will now be assigned as Global Hot Spares.

If a RAID physical drive fails, the controller will automatically use the nearest Global Hot Spare to rebuild the failed drive. This will help to minimize the amount of time that your RAID array is in a degraded state.

You do not need to create hot spare and/or Global hot spare policies for hot spares to work. The controller will automatically use the Global Hot Spares that are available.
