RAID 6 setup with missing storage
Hello!
I'm new to RAID setup, so please bear with me if my questions appear simple.
I have a server that was previously configured to be on RAID-6. The server is mention is Dell R730, with 12 disks each 6TB. Technically, there should be 60TB worth of disk space available. However, I can only see 3.3TB available in the disk.
My understanding is that RAID-6 setup requires a minimum of 4 disk, so assuming that not all the 12 disks were configured to the Virtual Disk, I should still have a minimum of 6TB instead of the seenable 3.3TB.
Any idea why would this occur?
Additionally, the server in question is already running in a live environment. I'm trying to see how I can actually find the remaining 56.7TB and allocate it to the virtual disk without impacting production and data.
Additional information:
OS: RHEL7
Appliance: Dell R730 PowerEdge

Hi,
Can you private message me the service tag so we can get some additional system details.
The first thing to do would be to install Openmanage server administrator and see if all the space is being used for the virtual disk. If it is all in the RAID 6 I would see what fdisk shows for available space.

You can specify the size of the array when you create it. So, it could, in theory, IF it is truly a RAID 6, have 4 disks or all 12 disks in the array and the array was set at 3.3TB instead of using all available space on the disks. Called "slicing", this is typically done to reduce the size of the "disk" made available to the OS, usually for compatibility reasons (MBR/BIOS, VMware, etc.).
If this is the case, it wouldn't have "just happened", it would have been configured that way. To determine if this is the case, you can look in OpenManage, Virtual Disks and see how much Available Space is listed for the disks in the RAID array and how they are set up.
