Hi,

The issue is within the PowerEdge Expandable Raid Controller (PERC) II. The firmware revision must be updated for Win2000. One more "gotcha" is the Perc II will not support a boot array larger than 12Gb.

Follow this procedure to resolve the issue:
Upgrade the Perc II firmware:
Perc II - Firmware, v. U84/C81, A02
File Name:  PERCU84.exe
http://support.dell.com/filelib/format.aspx?ReleaseID=R15115

Recreate your array with the boot array being less than 12Gb, subsequent data arrays do not have this limitation.

Reboot again and start the Win2000 install using this Perc II driver:
(AMI) PERC II, 2/SC, 2/DC, Driver, Win2000, v. 2.68, A03
Filename: W2k268A.exe (47 KB)
http://support.dell.com/filelib/format.aspx?ReleaseID=R25714

Hey thanks for the response - I'm wondering though - how do I start the install with the new driver. I am booting with the cdrom. Do I put the driver on a floppy and then hit some key stroke to allow the system to load in the driver?

I not at the site yet, so I haven't had a chance to experiment.

Hi,

Boot the server with the Win2000 CD. Watch the screen carefully for a prompt to press F6 to load Raid or Scsi drivers.

Thanks Mark - you've been a big help.

Hi,

The size limitation for the Boot Array is 12Gb.

I do not recommend creating a large array and using the OS to partition it into smaller sizes with this controller. I have seen reports of failure to install on various size partitions. I have also seen reports of failure after Service Pack upgrades.

After installing perc fw and using recommended perc driver for w2k, I was able to install the OS.  But, it wouldn't install in a 10 gig partition.  I installed it in a 4 gig partition.  So, what is the max size for a boot partition?
