RE: Cannot use unallocated HDD space

We have challenges with those R620 servers with the ff. details:

4 Drives x 931Gb =3.724TB Raw Capacity

1. During RAID 5 as we show you:

*2793 GB will be our usable drive.

*From it, we will be using 250Gb as our OS Drive.

*1.8TB will be our other volume which was automatically set on that capacity and 750Gb unallocated which we cannot use.

We have learned that MBR disk type is only 2TB maximum and the rest will not be usable. We tried to convert it to GPT as it's maximum is 9.4ZB but it was not successful since it is one disk, where the OS disk is located.

How can we use the 750GB unallocated disk?

You'll find the answer in this thread:

  • Windows cannot use a disk larger than 2TB unless it is converted to the GPT partitioning style.
  • Windows cannot BOOT a GPT disk unless it is installed in a UEFI-enabled system.

So, you have three options:

  • Set Boot Mode to BIOS, then create multiple RAID 5 VD's on the same set of disks. Each VD is seen by the OS as a separate "disk" in Windows, so the OS disk will be small enough for the OS (say 100GB, as long as it is less than 2TB), and the data disk can be the remaining 2693GB (converted to GPT).

    or

  • Set Boot Mode to UEFI, then create a single 2793GB RAID 5 VD, convert it to GPT, and install Windows on it.

    or

  • Get two separate disks for the OS, then use the entire RAID 5 only for data (converted to GPT).

As is, you cannot use that 750GB. You must use one of the options above.
