Replace SAS HDD with SSD

Power EDge R420 with SAS HDD drives in RAID array.  Would like to replace the drives with SSD ones.

  1. First question.  Can I remove a RAID 1 HDD drive and replace it with a SSD drive so that it is recognized as a replacment and RAID will rebuild?  Does the replacemen drive have to be the same as the HDD 300GB 15k)?
  2. Am i correct that you cannot mix SATA and SAS drives for a given RA{ID virtual disk?  In hoping to have the replacement drive rebuilt as in 1 above, would new SSD have to be SAS?

If a new SAS SSD won't just rebuild, then it doesn't seem to make sense to be spendy on SAS drives over SATA ones for casual IO server since an OS rebuild would be required.

Thoughts?

The replacement drive in the virtual disk should be from same family (SAS/SATA) or type (HDD/SSD) of the current virtual disk. If your current physical disk is SAS HDD, then replacement drive also need to be SAS HDD.
