Shared PERC8 - Multiple Assignment
Hi
We just got a new Dell VRTX with 5 SSDs. My plan was to create virtual disk containing all the five disks and use this as a shared storage for the blades.
However, when I am about to enable "multiple assignments" for the virtual disks I see this message:
Do not use this mode unless the servers have Cluster Services installed on them. Use of this mode without Cluster Services may lead to corrupted or lost data.
Could anyone please elaborate?
- Does this mean you actually have to cluster any application (Hyper-V in our case) that you would run on the nodes?
- Or is it just enough to install the cluster service (not to cluster anything)?
Thank you :)

Hi,
You should use an actual cluster. If it is not, it could cause corrupt data if multiple servers are writing to the same locations.

What is meant by same locations? Are you referencing the whole virtual disk as the location and that anything wrote to that disk could possibly overwrite other files residing on it? Or are you referring to 2 servers updating the same file.
My scenario is that we have 2 servers sharing 1 virtual disk but accessing independent .VHDs on that virtual disk. Is there any issue with this?

I have the same question as this.
I have 2 blades and i want to access the same virtual storage. If i create a cluster then surely one will always be redundant?
