Hi

Has anyone configured ssd disks in the PowerEdge R730xd for VMware Virtual SAN Setup .

When I go into the vsan setup i cant see any of the disks.

If i got inoto the bios I can see the 4 ssd and 4 sas disks is there any guids or recomendations for configuration i can use

Thanks

Hello Steve

Which RAID controller do you have in the R730? If you are going to be using VSAN then you should set the controller to HBA mode and let the operating system control the data placement. If you don't set the controller to HBA mode or set the individual drives to non-RAID then the drives will not be presented to the operating system unless they are in a RAID array.

Thanks

Hi Daniel

Thanks for getting back to me I sorted the SSD drive bit, it was the driver, I updated the driver in the ESXI host, I can now see all the disks.

So your saying don’t raid the SAS disks, just add them into the Vsan and let that look after the disks?

One other thing I added the 4 SAS disks to a raid 5 is there any way I can put them back to non raid so the ESXi can see them as individual disks.

We have 4 400 GB SSD, 4 300GB SAS and   4 dell R730 256 GB ram

This is a proof of concept not sure yet if I’m going to use the Vsan .

We are going to have 200 windows 7 VM's , we’ve got licensing for 300

Thanks

Steve
