Why does no Dell RAID controller support nvme drives?

Hello,

Why does no Dell RAID controller support nvme drives?

How to create hardware RAID with nvme drives in Dell servers?

Hi,

In deed, it's my first to read about H755N. But it's for 15G servers. And yes it does not use other drive types, only specifically.

Though, the drive you're using 1725a, that's a  NVMe PCIe SSD 2.5 - inch small form factor and NVMe PCIe SSD adapter? If yes, the server's S140 supports RAID configuration but you will not be able to use H740P any more. Re-cabling will be needed. https://dell.to/3nlNWcV

Thanks, good to know! Interesting reading.

However, this is for NVMe drives only - meaning that I need a new server first and can not use other drive types second.

I am looking for the same thing: a NAS made entirely of NVMe drives in a RAID array. It exists from other vendors (here's an example: https://www.broadberry.com/performance-storage-servers/cyberstore-248n-performance-nvme), but where is Dell's offering?

Good morning,

Unfortuantely, we don't have a direct competitor with this product. The systems I show advertised as NAS systems do not used an all NVMe setup. I'm only seeing support for SAS/NL-SAS/SATA protocol. However, we do have NVMe storage options, such as PowerMax, but it isn't a NAS. You might consider contacting Sales and communicate what you're looking for to get a recommendation.

H755N is supported from 15th generation of Dell PowerEdge servers. it is supported on selected server models with certain backplane.

Hello @hendranata,

I think the question should be the other way arround. [Edited: information is not correct]

You should check this documentation about Dell PowerEdge Express Flash NVMe PCIe SSD: https://dell.to/3ze6q3O

Regards.

Hello hendranata,

The S130 supports SATA HDD and SATA SSD only

Reference : https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000131648/list-of-poweredge-raid-controller-perc-types-for-dell-emc-systems

Series 10 Family

- S150 Software RAID - 6 Gb/s SATA, NVMe

- S140 Software RAID - 6 Gb/s SATA, NVMe
Series 9 Family

- S130 Software RAID - 6 Gb/s SATA

Series 8 Family

- S110 - 3 Gb/s SATA

I believe the post you are referring to on, page 1, is mine. I will go back and edit to remove S130 from that post. Sorry for any confusion.

in the front drive support 4 slot bay sata/sas.. if i use nvme u.2 sff-8639, will it works or detected from perc S140 ? does the front slot bay also support with NVMe sff-8639 ?

Hi,

R240 does not support NVMe drives although it has S140. The backplane does not have the capability to communicate with NVMe drives. More over, to my findings, you also need NVMe slimline cables. R240 does not have the capability.

Hello Charles,

what about the BOSS S1/S2 controller, isn't it made for M2 SSDs?

THanks!
