Will replacing RAID battery cause data loss?
I have a 2950 with a dead RAID controller battery. I have one person telling me that replacing the battery is a safe operation, and another saying that I'll have to rebuild the arrays. Which is it? Obviously, I'll make sure we have a good backup before doing anything.
Thank you in advance for your input,

No. The RAID configuration is stored in non-volatile memory, which is not connected in any way to the battery-backed cache.

I guess that's what I really meant - will the RAID configuration get hosed?

No, changing the battery will NOT cause data loss. It won't/can't even cause loss of the RAID configuration.

Just a noob question on the philosophy of upgrade/repair.
In general, the raid card battery provides power redundancy to the cache (raid card) memory in case of power loss so one does not loose data. Well that's what i understod anyway. So does one first need to check that the cache has been flushed to disk before removing the battery or is a clean shutdown sufficient?

A clean shutdown flushes the cache. In his case, where the battery had already failed, there was nothing in the cache as it would have been disabled.
