Anyway, I tried win98 driver..nothing to lose..obviously cannot work..
I installed winXP SP2 on SC440 and the printer is detected and properly configured. it sounds that the printer works fine..
I try your link, now.. :)

All ican suggest is, extract the xp drivers to a folder on your c: drive.
select 'add printer'
Let it detect your printer, then click next.
Select manual installation, on the next screen select the port you want to connect it to.
on the next screen where you select make and model, ignore that and click have disk.
Browse to the directory you created to hold the extracted files. It should point to .inf file.
click it and the next box should bring up a printer description. Select the one you want and click next. It should then install the drivers.

The website states that the xp drivers work with 2003 so there must be a way of forcing them in.

I've already tried that way to proceed.. It keeps saying "specified path does not contain any compatible driver. If so, please ensure it has been developped for windows 32bits" (something like that once translated from french..)
no way to force driver installation.. it's been a week I'm on it and I am about to give up because of the incompatibility..
I'm waiting for Brother support reply.. I hope they're able to fix something or what..
grrrr...:-(

Looking at the inf file for the xp drivers listed above shows a cat file missing. You may have better luck trying the printer, scanner package from the web site (4mb or so) or even the full installer package.

hi!

The 140mb package apps/drivers won't work since scanner feature is not yet implemented for 2003 server. It says "Your OS is not recognized... et blablablah....."
Anyway, Brother support sent me a driver this morning which I managed to force installation although it does'nt look that different from the ones I've tested before. :) (that makes me wonder why did I fail forcing installation, yesterday..)
Thank you tommo666 for your replies, I got thru this.. I hope I can get asleep, now :)
