C Drive filling Up

I have a client who has a poweredge 2800 Server with a 3 Drive raid 5 array. Dell Split the array into 3 Drives a 12 Gig C Drive and an Extended D and E Drive that are both about 60gigs each. The C drive contains Windows Small Business Server 2003 and SQL server and Is almost Full. Is there a way to extend the C drive. Also is there a size limit or something that would require you to setup a system this way with windows server SB 03.

Thanks for the info. THe D and E drive are not full and we are thinking about moving the SQL databases to the D partition. So will Diskpart let me raise the size of the partition without destroying the DATA or will I have to Backup change partitions then Restore the backup.

This is pretty normal for Dell, 12g system partitions.

You can extend it but of course your taking risks. You didn't mention if D or E are full or used. If your storing your SQL databases on the C drive (default) you might want to move them an alleviate your space issue, if not then I guess extending is a good idea.

In a nutshell you'll want to boot to dos or WinPE and use the diskpart utility to change the partition sizes. So you'll end up reducing the size of D or E and then extending that space into C. I recommend the ultimate boot CD ( http://www.ubcd4win.com/).

By default diskpart will not let you extend a system partition so you'll need to use the /override switch when extending.

It should NOT destroy the data. Backup anyway though :)

I would agree that whenever you're doing anything with resizing partitions and such on a system with critical data, it's even more important than normal operations to have a backup of your data, just in case.

This whitepaper has a good description of the process to move files, databases etc. from your C: drive:
