Dell Customized Image for Vmware ESXi 5.1

Hello,

where can i find the Dell customized image for ESXi 5.1.

I can only find the ISO Images for 5.0 (and 4.1). But none for 5.1. Unfortunately the original Vmware ISO image will not work as it does not find a NIC in my Dell R420. Which seems to happen as the original Vmware image does not include the Dell NIC driver for the R420.

I saw that today there is a download section on support.dell.com for ESXi 5.1 with about 36 files to download. But no ISO Image for ESXi 5.1 as it is for 5.0 and before.

Hope somebody can help or knows when Dell will bring the customized image.

Thanks!

Hello Russell

The link posted above works for me. Here is a more direct link you can try:

ESXistarter,

Since 5.1 released earlier this week, the customized image should be released in just a few weeks.

Yes I agree that I can't find a 5.0 image or 5.1 - what happened with 5.0?

If I go to ftp.dell.com/browse_for_drivers, then select servers, poweredge, r420 (or any other modern system), then enterprise solutions, CD iso images, and then ESXi 5.0 there are 2 Dell customized images. The one for build 623860 is probably your best choice.

Thanks, they only show one 5.0 image for the T110II.  Really hope they don't take too long with 5.1 as I want to test some nested Hyper-V hosts and don't fancy having to tinker with ESXi 5.0's settings too much to enable nesting.

The M1000e isn't a server; it's chassis that holds servers.

What server model do you have in your M1000e? M620's? If so, check the M620 folder on the FTP server.

I called Dell Support today.

Unfortunately they do not have 5.1 available. VMware community indicates HP has 5.1 available fro there servers.

Anyway, has anybody tried downloading 5.1 from vmware and upgrading from dells iso image of 5.0 update 1?

Come on Dell...

Being a VMware partner, you shoudl of had this out Day 1, no excuses.

I too am curious if anyone has tried upgrading a Dell imaged 5.0 to 5.1 using the VMware image...

Is it just NIC drivers not working?

I tried it.  I thought it would keep the NIC drivers, it did not.  I reinstalled the Dell image.  I'm thinking I might have to customize my own image if i want to run 5.1.  Disappointing that Dell didn't have this day 1, it wasn't availble for 5.0 or 5.0 u1 either until much later.

We have a number of R620 servers with the same issue.  We also have HP DL360 G7 servers that had no problem with the HP 5.1 image from vmware's site.  We tried to use the HP image to install/upgrade our R620's but got an error saying the image is for HP only and Dell bios was found so installation stops.

We have one R620 with an Intel NIC and that one had no problems with the generic vmware 5.1 image.  All hardware worked fine (even the BCM57800 NIC).

On all other R620's with BCM57800 and BCM57810 NICs, we get the no network adapter error during install/upgrade.

Dell and Vmware tells us to create our own custom 5.1 installation package and add the brodcom drivers in the async method, however the powercli runs into issues when you try to manually add the broadcom drivers into the package.

We've got open tickets with Dell & Vmware on this.  So far Dell engineering tells us they have no ETA for a dell customized ISO.

We have escalated to Dell & Vmware engineering (tier 3?) and have them working on it 24x7 for nearly a week now.

Dell definitely dropped the ball on this one.  They should've had a customized ISO on the same day vmware released 5.1 to the general public.  HP had a customized iso on the first day.

Guess I took too long to read the thread and reply.  The information that Chris posted is working for me.  Not the greatest download speeds, but it gets the job done in the interim.

Thanks Chris!
