32bit Fibre Channel Interface Card

Hello All,

I recently purchased a Dell PowerVault 650F SAN unit.  I now have the task of connecting this to my server (generic clone box).  Is there a 32bit Fibre Channel Card (db9) that would be capable of such a task?

I know Adaptec did a product (AHA-F940) that seems to be what I am after however this is now obsolete.

Do you have any thoughts?  Is it even possible?

This is my first foray into the world of SAN and I thank you for your assistance.

Hi Geoff,

I use a Q-Logic QLA2100 on mine, it is 64bit, bit will work quite happily in a 32bit slot.

You can pick them up on ebay for a tenner. The 2200 is better, but a tad more pricey (can find for 30 - 40 quid)

If you're still looking for cards/cables - let me know.  I've got some extras.

I am looking for a fiber channel card that will work with Seagate ST373453FC and ST3146807FC drives.  Preferrably 32 bit, on an X86 platform.

Any suggestions or any available?

I doubt that any 32-bit PCI fibre channel cards exist. They are made for high performance IO and didn't become 'common' till PCI-X existed.

You can use a 64-bit card in a 32-bit PCI slot without any problems. PCI and PCI-X are (supposed to be) fully interchangable. Obviously the setup would run at the slowest common denominator.

The only limitation is the physical layout of your motherboard. The card will have a part of the connector sticking over the pci-slot, so you'll want a slot that doesn't have capacitors, cable connectors or other things there, as it would prevent that card from properly seating in the slot.

Hi again,

the QLA-2000 is a genuine 32 bit card which will work quite happily with youre drives.

As Dev MGR says the slowest point will be the 32 bit interface, as youre drives are FC-AL2 which is the 2Gbit interface, so you should really be using a QLA-23xx series 2gbit/s which are all 64 bit to handle the throughput the drive is capable of delivering, especially when using more than one drive on the same network.
