Does the drive show up during server POST?

Does the OS recognise the drive?

Was the previous drive a VS80 also?

can you provide some server/OS/controller info?

Ensure you have the latest DDI for BE8.6

Thanks for the reply.

Upon installation, the drive (Quantum) took on the old (Benchmark) drivers.  It did show up in POST.  Due to workday time constraints, I wasn't able to reboot after setting the drivers straight.  I'll be able to reboot this weekend.

The previous drive was also a VS80.

The OS is Win 2K Server.  The device manager reports the drive as being there and no problems noted.  It doesn't show up in My Computer, but then again, the old one didn't either.  I assume that's normal for a backup drive.

Where can I find the latest drivers for BE 8.6.  I did a quick check on the web and could only find drivers for other OS.  After that they moved to 9.1.

Not real sure if Veritas supports 8.6 anymore, they may have an upgrade path to 9.1 and no longer post 8.6. If you had a VS80 previously on the box the drivers should be fine.

Tape drives will not show up in My computer.

you may need to run tapeinst.exe from the veritas directory this will install or reinstall the drivers for the tape drive. once this is complete reboot. Not sure of the exact location of tapeinst.exe simply do a search for it.

good luck to you.

I didn't have any luck following reboot, so I changed the SCSI address back to the default that was on the drive when received (I had previously changed it to the same as the removed drive).  After reboot, it worked like a charm.  POST still sees it as a Benchmark (the old drive) instead of a Quantum (the new one), but at least it's working now.  The OS device manager sees it as a Quantum.

I've successfully run a full backup now, so all is right with the world.

Thanks for the help.

This is a common problem with backup exec, when a tape drive is replaced windows sees it as a new hardware device and removeable storage claims the device as it's own. So BE sees it but it will show offline.

The fix: in computer management scroll down to removeable storage and expand physical devices. your new tape drive will show here as enabled. your old drive will still be listed as disabled, you can delete this entry. Right click on the device and select properties, towards the bottom left of the box is a tick box titled "enable tape drive". Make sure this is un-ticked and apply and exit.

In the folder c:\program files\veritas\nt is a batchfile called bestop.bat, run this. When completed run the file bestart.bat. Start backup exec and your drive should be available. If it still shows as offline, a reboot is required.

This is also explained in the device config wizard, under the advanced box.
