Cannot read rd1000 media from one 2008r2 server on another 2008 server
I have a 2008 R2 server with BE 12.5 fully patched. I'm running jobs just fine to a few RD1000 cartridges. What I would like to do is take the completed backup (copy job or regular full that run to the cartridges) fom the 2008 R2 server and plug it into a different 2008 server (not R2 but runs fully patched BE 12.5) and run the contents of the RD1000 cartridge off to the LTO2 tape drive that is connected to that server for long term backups.
I can use the cartridges just fine on the 2008R2 server, I see it in explorer and can open it to see it's contents. I can run jobs to it and restore just fine.
The problem is when I connect the RD1000 cartridges up to the 2008 server they do not show up as a drive letter. If I go to storage manager in windows it wants me to initialize it as if it's new media. If I put the cartridge back into the 2008 R2 server I can read the data on it just fine in explorer and in BE.
Any ideas why this happens? Maybe I'm just missing something simple? How can I get both 2008 and 2008R2 servers to see this media?
thanks

My first thought was that you may be using exFAT but if you are interchanging with 2008 and 2008 R2 server both should support exFAT. Server 2003 would require an update to read exFAT disks.
Could you attach a screenshot of your disk management view or more details about the drive letter assigned to the media and how it is reported in the disk management view (format or partition information partition, etc?)

Sorry for the late reply. Perhaps if I assigned a drive letter to the RD1000 (which I very well could have) media on the 2008 R2 server I would not be able to read it in the 2008 server if that drive letter is already in use?
Here is a screenshot of the disk management section on the 2008 R2 server (where the backups run to the media):

Drive letters are not cached on the cartridge, however in some cases the OS assigns a drive letter to a letter already mapped to a network path. You should check the disk management view on your 2008 machine to make sure no conflicts exist and the disk shows up as a healthy NTFS partition as it does in the Server 2008 R2 view.

The Disk management on the 2008 server has no conflicts (that I can see) but when I plugin the RD1000 media it comes up that it must be initialized. However if I do that I'll obviously lose the data. Here is a screenshot:
If I plug the media into the 2008 server, it comes up as the drive letter R:

I might have formatted it on the 2008 r2 server, I cannot remember. I do have 3 cartridges though and I know I didn't format all 3 but all 3 are showing up this way on the 2008 server. If I put them in the RD1000 drive on the 2008 R2 server I can read them just fine and access all the data theough explorer or BEWS. I'll run that the disk check on the volumes this week. Thanks for the help.
Also, I'm not sure I mentioned this or if it's even important but I do not actually have an RD1000 drive on the 2008 server, just an adapter to go from SATA to USB so I can copy the data to tape. I do have an RD1000 drive on the 2008 R2 server that runs the backups though.

Thank you for the screenshot. I haven't seen this before. I'd recommend running a disk error check from your Server 2008 R2 system if you haven't done so already. (Right-click properties on the volume from disk management and select the "Tools" tab.)
Has the cartridge been re-formatted or re-partitioned since it was received from the factory? If so, on which system?

Thanks, this is an important piece of information.
You cannot use RDX or RD1000 cartridges without an RDX or RD1000 dock. Using a generic SATA to USB adapter will not work. The reason for this behavior is that are areas of the disk are reserved for cartridge metadata. This explains the unrecognized file system displayed in disk management on your Server 2008 machine.
You will need to purchase an RD1000 dock to use with your Server 2008 machine in order to access RD1000 cartridges from that machine.
