Hello Ecollins,

Have you tried to reseat the Library control board( where you plug in the ethernet cable) on the TL4000.  All you need to do is to loosen the screws and you can pull it out.  I would power off the TL4000 and pull it out for 30 seconds and then reinsert it.  Once that is done power it up and then try to access it again.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

It did not help. When my backup program threw an error about Drive 2 being offline I checked on the library and now there's an Attention light on. I shut down the library and pulled and re-seated the network tray and both drive trays. Both power supplies seem to be fine. It throws the attention light as soon as the unit boots, before the library scans or does any inventorying. The User Guide suggests resetting everything back to default but I'd rather not do that if it can be avoided.

After rebooting the server twice,  restarting the tape library numerous times, switching network cables and ports on the network switch, changing the IP address, and with the alert light still on, I could not get into the web interface. This morning, before the big weekend backups take place, I thought I would try again to login and it worked! It's disturbing not to know why I can now login to the GUI like normal.

Hello Ecollins,

I would say that since you have used different browsers that more then likely that the LCB is going out on the unit.  If the library is not at firmware level B.20 then I would upgrade that as well & see if it makes it so that the web utility won’t go offline again.  Here is a link to the firmware if needed.  http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/powervault-tl4000?driverId=DH9D6&osCode=WNT5&fileId=3009061621&languageCode=en&categoryId=TA

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I wish that was it, but I used three browsers (IE, Chrome, Firefox) on two difference machines after clearing the history in every case.

Hello Ecollins,

The only other thing that I can see that would cause that issue is maybe your browser settings.  Not sure which browser that you were using but if it happens again that is what I would try.

It's not clear which of the LTO4's to choose. It has two SAS connections so it's either LTO4FH or LTO4HHv2, but I can't figure out which to choose.

Great info, thank you. I knew I'd seen the number somewhere but with the web utility offline it was pretty hard to figure it out. At any rate, we are at B.20 for the library but only one of the drives had current firmware so I updated it, rebooted the system and now it's unavailable in the web interface again. Perhaps if I wait a few days it will miraculously reappear. At any rate, thank you for your assistance with this. Backups really matter.

Hello Ecollins,

If only have 2 drives in the unit & no room for expansion then you have full height drives. If you have 2 drives in the unit and can add another drive or 2 then you half height.  If you look in the web utility & go to the Service library menu and then go to upgrade firmware it will list out the drive out like LTO4HH sas V2 if it is a half height drive.  If you don’t see the HH then it should be a full height drive.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello Ecollins,

I will send you a private message & if you could send me your service tag I can see what we can do about that LCB board.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi, I'm also thinking it could be related browser or the java version. I found that below from an old document. When you mentioned you can ping it I thought that's okay but still you can check your network settings with the operator panel like page 46 https://dell.to/3GMvaW4

Java Applet Requirements

  • Java 1.5.0 or later installed on the host computer
  • Internet Explorer® 6.0 or later for IPv4
  • Internet Explorer 7.0 or later for IPv6

Hi, I assume you have done what has been previously shared under this topic. What I suspect most is that it may be related to the browser version. You can try older browser versions. And one thing you can check Java enabled for your browser.

Internet Explorer
  1. Click Tools and then Internet Options
  2. Select the Security tab, and select the Custom Level button
  3. Scroll down to Scripting of Java applets
  4. Make sure the Enable radio button is checked
  5. Click OK to save your preference
