Dell PowerVault 124T upgradability

Dear All ,

This may be a recurrent question but I would like to know.
Can I add an other caddy into the tape autoloader ? ( it comes as refurbished with 1 caddy can I add an other one my self ?)
also it  comes with an LTO-5 drive what is the upgradability of the system I could insert and newer LTO drive in and still work ?

or I will be stuck at LTO-5 ?

regarding the media , are they interchangeable with other manufacturers ?

Thank you in advance

Hello Edge_Ripper,

I'll be happy to see if I can provide you some information and references.

124T information can be located here:

PowerVault 124T Manuals, documents, and other information

https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/powervault-124t/docs

A few bullet points:

2U chassis

1 LTO Drive

SAS

Up to 16 inventory slots

8 per magazine

LCD control panel

Nothing serviceable in device except magazine

Only one power supply - not replicable

Uses Quantum or IBM drives LTO-6 and above usually IBM

Please let me know if this helps.

Dear Sir ,

well that's unfortunate ,
because an other producer of tape libraries , has the ability to upgrade the tape drive by the user. I don't want to get a product that is not upgradable down the line either from me or the distributor or someone in general.

because the newest I can find is the LTO-5. and Is not bad but I would like to have the ability to go higher. The other company has user swappable drives. Yes expensive but still at some point they will become cheap.

If you know any tape library of Dell that has user upgradable tape drives that would be lovely, because I really don't want to go to an other company , I love DELL but the fact of being locked in is an issue for me.

Thank you in advance

Upgrading the drive is possible with tape libraries like:  TL2000, TL4000, ML6000.

Our newest library - ML3 started with LTO6 and is currently upgradable to LTO8.

I hope this helps.
