Disk issue

Hi,

We did just bought 6 new (dell supported drives) drives for our MD300i, and add them to the device, Last week we did create 2 new groups from these 6 new discs, and untill yesterday everything working just fine we could use these 2 virtual discs. today I found alot of error 11 (The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk5\DR29.) in the system logs of the OS.

I did check the drives of the SAN and findout the problematic drive is drive 9,( one of the new drives) and the Guru says that drive has been removed from the group or this drive belong to other group, things that did not really heppend.

so the question is,

is this new drive defect? or there is something els going on here?

Drive 9 does look to be bad and looks to need to be replaced. As far as the  \Device\Harddisk5\DR29 that is hard to tell how to resolve that as we would  need a DSET from the host server.

Can I have you pull a support bundle so I can take a look at it. That will give us a better idea if the issue is on the drive of if something else is causing the problem. I will send you an email to the email you have on file so you can send me the zip file.

Hi Kenny,

Thanks for your replay,

Sorry but I am new with MD3000i, how can I pull a support bundle? should I from the support Tab use this link "Gather Support Information" ?

Also now when I open the MD3000i console I can see that the Array is optimal but some  minutes later get the message that the array is not optimal and the guru says:

By-passed Physical Disk

What Caused the Problem?

The array has detected the presence of a physical disk but is unable to communicate with the physical disk. The Recovery Guru Details area provides specific information you will need as you follow the Recovery Steps.

Thanks

So after looking through the logs we may be actually looking at a couple of different issues. To start with the error you are getting on  \Device\Harddisk5\DR29 is pertaining to disk 5 in windows disk management. Looks like a possible file system error. May need to do a check disk on that disk but that is on the OS (Windows) side of things. Now on the MD3000i I do see what looks to be a failed hard drive on the drive in slot 9.

If you replace the drive in slot 9 that will fix the drive issue but will still need to look into the windows error or file corruption that is on that harddisk5. Once all that is done I would greatly advise you to update all the drivers and firmware on the server and array and hard drives.

Hi kanny,

Thanks for your replay,

First regarding the Harddisk 5, I think this error was for the virtual disk that we had created of a discs group that the disk 9 was in that group, if right now I check the diskmannegment (in wondows)  there is no disk 5 becuse we did remove the virtual disk that contained the disk 9..

So if I understand you correctly the brand new harddisk 9 that just came out of the box is defect and I should send it back to the  Dell for a replacement  correct?

Thanks
