I doubt anything like that actually exists.

To back the unit up, install a backup application and back the data up to tape.

That I am doing. Backup Exec is running like a champ. What I am really interested in is the recovery process. Restoring a NAS box is not very straight forward. It would be nice to have some ideas as to how to recover a NAS box before you actually need to do it.

The easiest way to recover the OS is to restore the OS from the CDs. This does put the system back to factory default OS settings, so would need work in the sense of setting IP, servername, join a domain, etc. Alternatively you can use your own preferred method for backing up the OS, tho IDR uses install media I think, so that may not be an option. Things that come to mind are a ghost boot floppy and back up the image to a network share (on another system obviously).

To restore the data (share data), you can use the same restore process you'd use on any (other) server.
