Error reported:The device is not ready.
Hi
I'm using Windows 2000 Server and Backup Exec 9.1, when i run separate small backups, it all works fine. However when i try to back up all the data in one backup, i get the following error message:
Storage device "DELL 1" reported an error on a request to write data to media
Error reported:
The device is not ready.
Tried doing the Dell Administrator test to test the backup drive and its fine, suspect that there is some conflict or error with the tape drive?
Thanks

What tape drive are you using? Internal or External to the server?
Has the large backup previously worked?
How big is the backup set? Will it fit on an entire tape?
When the error message appears is there any LED's flashing or illuminated that are normally not?
ALWAYS:
Be sure you are using the latest device drivers from VERITAS for your unit. www.support.veritas.com
You have cleaned your unit recently.

The large backup has previously worked and its around 19GB, so its not a tape size problem as the tape should support 20GB uncompressed and 40GB compressed. There are no LED's flashing or illuminated that is not normal. Device drivers from VERITAS are latest and the tape drive has been cleaned before.

When the large backup fails is it prior to the job starting or at some point during the backup? You should be able to see the byte count of the failed job in the Job Monitor.
When you split up the large job into two jobs do they both fit on a single tape?
Are there any errors in the Windows Event viewer?
You may want to run the SGMon utility that comes with B/E. You can find it in the Program Files\VERITAS\BackupExec\NT directory. Within the utility just check all the boxes under Capture and be sure Capture to file is checked. Run this utility while you are backing up your failing set. Once the job fails look through the log file to see if anything stands out that may explain your failure.
