extending virtual disk in power-vault MDSM

i have one disk group of 1 TB (RAID10)and in this disk group i am having only one virtual disk 1TB so no  free space in Disk group . now i need to incerase the Virtual disk to 2 TB , i have installed free disk to slot .

i know that i can increase the disk group using unconfigured capacity and then increase virtual disk .

my question , can i increase the virtual disk capacity directly by clicking on virtual disk -increase capacity-add physical disk -then choose the disk slots . will this automatically increase my disk group ?

can anyone test and confirm .

FYI- diskgroup is having only on VD and diskgroup has no space left .

Hello berwal1916,

Here is the best way to add the free space to the disk group:

To add free capacity to a disk group:

1. In the AMW, select the Storage & Copy Services tab.

2. Select a disk group.

3. From the menu bar, select Storage → Disk Group → Add Physical Disks (Capacity). Alternatively, right-click on the disk group and select Add Physical Disks (Capacity) from the pop-up menu.

The Add Free Capacity window is displayed. Based on the RAID level, and the enclosure loss protection of the current disk group, a list of unassigned physical disks is displayed.NOTE: If the RAID level of the disk group is RAID Level 5, or RAID Level 6, and the expansion enclosure has enclosure loss protection, Display only physical disks that will ensure enclosure loss protection is displayed and is selected by default.

4. In the Available physical disks area, select physical disks up to the allowed maximum number of physical disks.NOTE: You cannot mix different media types or different interface types within a single disk group or virtual disk.

5. Click Add.

A message prompts you to confirm your selection.

6. To add the capacity to the disk group, click Yes.

NOTE: You can also use the Command Line Interface (CLI) on both Windows and Linux hosts to add free capacity to a disk group. For more information, see the CLI Guide.

NOTE: After the capacity expansion is completed, additional free capacity is available in the disk group for creation of new virtual disks or expansion of existing virtual disks.

Once you have completed this then you can go to the virtual disk and add the free space capacity to the virtual disk.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Which model MD do you have? With the MD3000/3000i, you cannot grow the VD in MDSM, but instead you have to use SMCLI (command line version of MDSM basically (gets installed when you install MDSM)). If you have an MD32xx or higher, MDSM can expand the VD if the diskgroup (DG) has room. Sam's instructions allow you to add another disk to the DG to make this room if there is no room at this time. This part (adding another drive to the raid set) can take hours to days depending on how many drives there are in the raid set at this time, and how large and fast they are (e.g. 7200rpm 4TB will take multiple days easily in a raid 5 or 6 setup, but a 146GB/15k rpm drive may only take a few hours)).
