External Tape not recognized by OS

Here are the specs:

Poweredge 500SC w/2000 Server
Adaptec 2940UW Adapter
Sony AIT2 External Tape

The tape drive is recognized by the adapter during boot-up, but Win2K Server doesn't see it.  I have tried updating the system BIOS, the card BIOS, the card drivers, but with no luck.  The tape drive is not listed in the hardware list.

I'm not sure if this is Dell specific, but I have also tried the same setup in a 600SC running NT, and a 2600 running 2K3 with the same results, but I can put this into my white box desktop without any problems.

Until recently we had an Adaptec 2930 with two HP DAT24 externals that run fine in the 500SC.  Can someone help me?!?!

Have you been using the same adapter in all the servers and get the same failure?

The adapter may be part of the problem.  Set the adapter back to defaults (get to the adapter BIOS via POST).

Try installing the adapter in different slots.

Is the adapter listed in the OS device manager?  (i think you said you tried to upgrade the drivers)

Is the driver properly terminated  (check cabling and look for any bent pins)?

The 2940UW supports singled ended devices.  Does the AIT-2 drive single ended or LVD?

1. Have you been using the same adapter in all the servers and get the same failure?
Yes, it is the same adapter.

2. The adapter may be part of the problem.  Set the adapter back to defaults (get to the adapter BIOS via POST).
I have tried resetting the adapter back to defaults on every machine that I have tried.  No change.

3. Try installing the adapter in different slots.
I've tried every slot available.  No change.

4. Is the adapter listed in the OS device manager?  (i think you said you tried to upgrade the drivers)
Yes, the adapter shows up in Windows Device Manager in every machine, and is listed as "Working Properly" with no conflicts.  I have also tried installing the latest drivers for the adapter.  No change.

5. Is the driver properly terminated  (check cabling and look for any bent pins)?
6. The 2940UW supports singled ended devices.  Does the AIT-2 drive single ended or LVD?

These two are somewhat related.  The cables are brand new, and all pins are perfect.  The SDX-500V AIT2 tape drive can be used in SE or LVD configuration.  There is a dip switch on the unit to turn the internal termintator on or off.  For testing purposes I have tried both.  With the terminator on, the adapter recognizes the drive, but Windows does not.  With the terminator off, neither the adaptor nor Windows recognizes the drive.

Remember that all of this was tried in 3 different Dell servers, a 500SC, a 600SC, and a 2600.  I only tried the 600SC briefly because that server is used heavily.  All of them gave me the results above.  When this entire setup is installed in my whitebox desktop, however, it all works perfectly.

Any other questions?

Go into the setup for the Adapter on startup. Usually there is a prompt for CTRL-A. You may see this prompt more than one time if you have multiple adapters on the system.

Once in, look at the disk information. Does the drive appear in the list of detected devices? If not, the problem could be the termination. If the drive does not appear in the list of detected devices at startup, it will never, ever appear in the operating system.
