Failed Virtual Disk - Physical Disk Failure

Hi,

I am currently getting this error with my MD3000 unit. There are also flashing amber lights on a couple of the drives.

Also tried putting in a new disk (from Dell) for one of them which didn't work.

How can this be fixed?

Hello gil10,

There are a couple of things that we need to know.

1. What is the current firmware that the MD3000 is at right now?

2. what is the Raid level that you are running on those drives?

3. you stated that you replaced a drive is the one that you replaced located in Enclosure 1, Slot 4?

Please reply back as soon as you can so we can better assist you.

Thanks for your reply.

1. Physical Disk Firmware - ST3300657SS(ES64), ST3300555SS(T107)

RAID controller module firmware: PkgInfo 06.17.10.60

NVSRAM file with RAID controller module firmware - N133X-617890-015

2. 5

3. yes

Not sure on where to find the Firmware version of the MD3000, so I gave you what I did find.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Gil.

Hello Gil,

Your firmware for the MD3000 & the harddrives are out of date and needs to be upgraded.  But the more serious issue is that can’t be done until we resolve all the drive issues.  With having lost 3 drives in a raid 5 that is bad.  We will need to do a recovery to see if we can force a drive back online and see if we can get the MD to a point where we can upgrade the firmware.  At this point it is best to contact support to do this as there are quite a few things that need to happen so we can attempt the recovery.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

I rang Dell Support and there reply was:

Our recommendation at this point would be recreate the RAID group with the remaining good disks, and assign at least 1 as a hotspare.

3 failed disks in a RAID 5 will cause the RAID and its VDs to break. Data in VD 1 and myapples is presumably lost in this case, and you will need to recover from a known good backup.

I don't have a known good backup!

You mentioned something about forcing a drive back online. Is that still a possibility?

Hello Gil,

Yes you can.  What you can do is to pull one of the filed drives & reseat it to see if the drive will spin back up.  If the drive goes active then you will want to wait at least 30 minutes so that the array will attempt to balance out.  If it can recovery the array then you can move to the second failed drive and do the same thing.  Once you get it to a point that you can run a backup then I would so that you can recovery as much data as you can so that you can recreate the array and restore the data.

Let us know if you have any other questions.
