jumbo frame on me4
Hi,
I need clarification about jumbo frame with powervualt me4. On user guide i saw that the frame accepted is 8900 with 100 byte overhead for compatibility with standard mtu 9000.
So in vmware configuration i need to set 8900 for vmkernel or i can leave the standard mtu at 9000?

Hi Andrea,
I can see how the way it is worded is confusing. From what I can tell Vmware does not support anything over 9000 so it doesn’t leave room for overhead. So setting both to 8900 and leaving 100 bytes for overhead is better, though it probably will still work if you leave Vmware at 9000 and the ME4 unit only uses 8900.

You are correct, it should work fine leaving it at 9000 in Vmware.

hi,
i know that vmware support frame up to 9000. on powervault i can't set mtu, i can flag only "use jumbo frame".
the question is, with a vmware configured whit 9000 mtu can be a problem? from dell's documentation i don't think can be a problem. Otherwise the problem can be present also with standard mtu because the storage work with 1400 bytes and not 1500.
from the user guide
"Enable Jumbo Frames: Enables or disables support for jumbo frames. Allowing for 100 bytes of overhead, a normal frame can contain a 1400-byte payload whereas a jumbo frame can contain a maximum 8900-byte payload for larger data transfers."

"Jumbo frames increase the efficiency of ethernet networking and reduce CPU load by including a larger amount of data in each Ethernet packet. The default ethernet packet size, or MTU (maximum transmission unit), is 1,500 bytes. With Jumbo frames, this is increased to 9,000 bytes. Note: PowerVault ME4 Series storage supports a maximum 8900-byte payload, allowing 100 bytes of overhead for the MTU of 9000. "
