MD1000, 1 disk failed, others are foreign

Dear experts,

My storage is MD1000, now it shows 1 disk failed, other are foreign. I shows the following error when I import foreign. I am using Raid 5.

I am wondering if there is a way to solve this.

Hello chilukey1,

What you need to do is in the controller card bios go to PD mgmt. & hit F2 & see if it has an option for preferred cache.  If so then what you need to do is to clear the preferred cache, as a safety you can back the drives out of your MD first before clearing the cache & then insert the drives again & let the MD scan the drives.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Dear Sam,

Do you mean plug out all the drives then clear the preferred cache?  I am wondering how to back the drives. I can not go into the file system.

Hello chilukey1,

Yes when I state back the drives out I mean physically renove them about 2 inches from the MD1000 chassis so that they are not connected to the backplane of the MD1000.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Dell Sam,

It doesn't have any menu when I hit F2 in the PD mgmt.

Now, I move all the drives to another MD1000 box, it shows all the drives are foreign. but the following error still exists when I import foreign:

ERROR: foreign config import

3 out of 3 failed to import

I am wondering i have to import the foreign or I can clear the foreign? If I clear the foreign, can I read my data or the data has been lost?

Hello chilukey1,

What you will need to do then is in the controller bios go to PD Mgmt you will need to do a retag.  Once the Retag completes if the drive is still showing as failed then you will need to replace it.  Also after the retag your data should be accessible as long as the retag completes successfully.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.
