MD3600i path problem with vmware 4.1
Hi everybody
I'm encountering some problem with a MD3600i storage array; it works as storage for some (3) M710HD blade running vmware esxi (the free version).
On 2 is installed vmware esxi 4.1u1 and the 4.1u3 on the remaning one.
They all have a broadcom Broadcom NetXtreme II 57711 (10 Gb) used for the iSCSI connectivity.
Now the problem: randomly and from about two week from now, sometimes the path between the storage and the server became unavailable, the storage event viewer has some entry like:
RAID Controller Module Enclosure 0, Slot 0 Virtual Disk not on preferred path due to failover
and in the vmware event tab some like:
Lost connectivity to storage device naa.6782bcb00037cbde0000188b506be0c2.
Path vmhba43:C1:T0:L6 is down.
Affected datastores: "ESXi3_DS3".
Some extra info:
Storage firmware: 07.80.41.60
NVSRAM version: N26X0-780890-901
AMW version: 10.80.G6.47
Server (esxi 4.1u1)
driver: bnx2x
version: 1.60.50.v41.2
firmware-version: 6.2.12 bc 6.2.10
Server (esxi 4.1u3)
driver: bnx2x
version: 1.64.32.v40.1
firmware-version: 6.2.12 bc 6.2.10
I'm pretty sure the cable and the switch are OK...
Thanks
Giuseppe

Do you have the latest version of MDSM installed on a Windows system on the network? The reason I ask is from inside that software you can go to that VD and change the path that it is using and move it back over to the preferred path. I have seen it move over like this and its not always something to worry about as it can be caused when a CM does a reboot. I would advise to make sure everything is up to date and move the VD back to the preferred path and then keep an eye on it and see if it keeps going to the NON Preferred path. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Kenny K, thank you for your answer.
I've already changed the VD path from the non preferred to the preferred one, but with no reason (i think) sometimes it fails and return to the non preferred one....
I add that the path selection policy in VMWare is set as Most Recently Used for all the datastore (i don't know if it's an usefull information)

Do you have other VD that stay on that preferred path? Trying to determine if the issue may be something on the controller or if it is specific to a certain VD.
