Ping error on MD3220i

Hi,

I am in the process of setting up a MD3220i SAN unit.

I am using the default IP addresses for each of the iSCSI ports on both Controller 0 and Controller 1.

i have setup my host (Hyper-V Server 2008 R2) and I am using 2 NICs on this host for SAN traffic, the IP Addresses that I have assigned are 192.168.130.3  (255.255.254.0) and 192.168.132.3 (255.255.254.0)

Each NIC is connected through a separate switch to the SAN.

when I ping each of the 4 SAN ip addresses, only 2 will reply, these are 192.168.130.101 and 192.168.132.101.

Why do the other two IP addresses (192.168.131.101 and 192.168.133.101) no respond to the ping request.

All subnet masks on the SAN ports are 255.255.255.0

Thanks for your help

Hi Sam,

Sorry for the delay, I was trying a few things and managed to resolve the issue.

The SAN comes with default subnet masks of 255.255.255.0 on all iSCSI ports, but I had set my Host NICs to have subnet masks of 255.255.254.0.

Once I changed the SAN subnet masks to 255.255.254.0 I could ping all 4 ports on the channel from the host.

Many thanks for helping me with this issue.

Hello MrMoo,

The controller in the MD3220i are active passive. So with that being said your ports on the controllers are the same way. So even though your port is not responding to ping if you remove the first connection on the controllers in the MD the second connection should come alive & respond to pings. Here is our deployment guide just so you can confirm that everything is setup correctly. ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/Common/powervault-md3200i_Deployment%20Guide_en-us.pdf

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Sam,

Many thanks for your quick response.

I am still a little confused :-)

It seems that if I disconnect one of the ports (192.168.130.101) - the other port (192.168.131.101) still does not respond to pings. This also goes for the other pair of ports (192.168.132.101 and 192.168.133.101)

So I have not yet been able to get these two ports to reply to pings. The guide states that you  should be able to successfully ping all ports.

Thanks

Hello MrMoo,

Can I get you to run a support bundle from your MD3220i.  I will send you a private message and if you can reply back once you have uploaded the logs that would be great.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.
