Possible solution to slow backup problems with 110T / LTO2's
If you've got a Powervault 110T/LTO2 that's not managing much more than 100-150Mb/minute, the following may be worth trying.
We're running a 110T/LTO2 unit, attached to a Poweredge 2650 (dual 3.2Ghz) with a SCSI-attached 220s array. We're backing up around 350gb per day, mostly from the locally attached array but with around 50gb pulled across a gigabit network. The server's running Windows 2003 Server SP1, along with BackupExec 9.1 sp2.
After a long and ongoing saga with Dell support, and several drive replacements following failed tape ejects, we ended up with the Veritas tape device drivers, latest Adaptec SCSI drivers, and a backup that was taking around 18-20 hours to complete. Having spent a day or two trying various combinations of drivers & config settings, and not getting anywhere, we looked for other options.
Following the release of the new 110T/LTO2 firmware (53Y3) we updated the drive and retried our backups, again with the Veritas driver. This didn't seem to help so we opted to break with tradition and try the Dell provided LTO2 driver, rather than the native Veritas driver.
This seems to have done the trick; after a reboot our backups are now running at around 280Mb/min for compressed data (JPG images) through to 1.2Gb/min for compressable data.
Out of interest we reinstalled the Veritas drivers, and watched the transfer rate return to 100Mb/min.
No idea why the Veritas drivers are running so slowly, but I guess there's some sort of problem with these and the latest firmware.
I'll post an update in a week or so assuming all's still well.
